Mother Nature’s wrath this summer has wreaked havoc on festivals all over the world, claiming her latest victim in France at the Rock En Seine Festival held last weekend in a Parisian suburb.
Arcade Fire was just getting into the groove of their set when a sudden rainstorm blew through the area, forcing the band to take shelter and cut their performance short. Despite best efforts to mop up, organizers deemed the equipment too wet and unsafe to play considering the electrical hazards, much to everyone’s disappointment. Undeterred, Arcade Fire’s Win Butler brought out the band anyway, and led them through an acoustic version of “Wake Up.”
“It took them five minutes to become heroes for a year,” Rock En Seine chief Salomon Hazot told Pollstar, describing the reaction the band got from the 35,000-capacity, sold-out crowd.

Last month, a group of my friends went to one of Lady Gaga’s “Fame Monster” concerts. Within hours, they had (sadly, poor quality) pictures and videos up on their Facebook pages leaving many to ponder…is that Madonna? Christina Aguilera? Elton John? (Just kidding)
Now, it’s no surprise that concerts pop up on the internet immediately after the event, but soon the quality could be top-notch and the cost will be free.
That’s because American Express is launching a new concept that combines social media with live streaming, digital-quality video, which will stream on YouTube and Vevo, according to Pollstar.com.
The first of five bands to be filmed for the live stream is Arcade Fire at their Aug. 4-5 concerts at NYC’s Madison Square Garden. The Arcade Fire concert is scheduled to stream at 10 p.m. on Aug. 5 on YouTube and Vevo.
Other bands that have announced streaming concerts includes John Legend and The Roots. Though this isn’t the first time that concerts have streamed online, it will be the largest coordinated event yet. YouTube and American Express teamed up in December to stream Alicia Keys. YouTube also streamed various bits of San Francisco’s Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival, the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and a U2 concert.

Arcade Fire isn’t your typical indie rock band from Canada. That’s because the core of their group isn’t comprised of four skinny-jean wearing boy-men, but rather a husband and wife team who take their instrument playing seriously. Of course there are other group members (four men and two women, total) and they might wear skinny jeans. But I digress…
Not many groups can boast more than a couple guitars and a drum set, but Arcade Fire uses that and more: the piano, violin, cello, viola, double bass, keyboard, French horn, xylophone, glockenspiel, accordion, hurdy gurdy, mandolin and harp.
They also boast numerous awards: the Juno Award for Songwriter of the Year for “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out),” “Rebellion (Lies),” and “Wake Up;” as well as the Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year for “Neon Bible.”
“Neon Bible” also won the award for Best International Album in 2008 from the Meteor Music Awards. They’ve also received PLUG Awards and Studio 8 International Music Awards.
There are no Grammy Awards for this group yet, but rest assured. They have been nominated three times (twice in 2006 and once in 2008), but nothing for the 52nd annual Grammy Awards later this month.
